(orange) / hedge thorn

枳 [zhǐ]1. A deciduous shrub or small tree, with many spiny branches. The fruit is yellow-green, sour, and inedible, but can be used for medicinal purposes (also known as "trifoliate orange").2. The fruit of the trifoliate orange is used in traditional Chinese medicine; immature fruit is referred to as 枳实, mature fruit is called 枳壳.3. An ancient county name ([En.] Zhi county). During the Warring States period, there was a Zhi city in Chu, and later Zhi county was established during the Han dynasty, which was part of Ba commandery. Its site is in present-day Fuling County, Sichuan Province.4. A cold-hardy deciduous orange tree native to China, characterized by trifoliate leaves. The small, fragrant fruit is quite sour. It is widely cultivated for ornamental leaves or as a hedge, especially used as rootstock for grafting various edible citrus. Relevant citations:1. From Xu Shen's "Shuowen Jiezi": "枳 wood is similar to orange. It is classified under trees, only for its sound."2. From "Liji·Mingtang Wei": "Yin used the zhu to signify the curving of the branches."3. From "Book of the Later Han": "Erect a fence with six枳." Note: "枳" refers to fragrant wood.4. From "Zhouli·Kaogongji·Xugong": "The orange fruit surpasses the Huai River and becomes枳." * (referenced from traditional dictionary explanations) See also "枳椇", "枳首" and other entries.
