之 [zhī]1. Particles indicating possession and relationship: 赤子之心 [the heart of a child].2. Used between subject and predicate, transforming them into sentence constituents: 大道之行也,天下为公 [The great way is to treat the world as a commonwealth].4. Pronoun, substituting for people or things: 置之度外 [leaving out of consideration]. 等闲视之 [to regard lightly].5. Pronoun, this or that: 之二虫,又何知 [these two insects, what do they know].6. Null use, having no reference: 久而久之 [for a long time].7. Toward, to: 吾欲之南海 [I want to go to the South Sea].之 [zhī]1. Verb: The original meaning is to exit, emerge, or grow.2.
