莢 (jiā) 1. A type of plant fruit. It develops from a single ovary generated by one carpel. When the fruit skin matures, it becomes dry, flat, and long, splitting open along both sides; after splitting, the fruit skin forms symmetrical halves. Most leguminous plant fruits are like this. For example: "bean pods," "soap pods." 2. Refers to "elm pods." From "Two Poems of Early Summer" by Fan Chengda in the Song Dynasty: "Mulberry leaves dewy branches, silkworms grow old, vegetable flowers form pods, butterflies fly in." Also known as "pod fruit." 3. A surname. For instance, during the Spring and Autumn period, there was a noble named Jia Chengxi.
