Dialectally, it retains the same meaning. In ancient Shu, people referred to their mothers as "姐". 〈方〉∶同本义。古代蜀人称母为姐，蜀谓母曰姐。——《说文》。段玉裁注:“方言也，其字当蜀人所制。”
